An unsuccessful attempt of a lonely guy to change his pointless life. In search for a job and money he falls in love with a girl next door believing that she will change his life. At the high point of his illusion she walks away with the money he's borrowed from a friend and leaves him even more miserable than he was before they met.

诗意现实主义结构。妹妹的疾病代表着生活的苦难，海边是美好生活的象征，所以妓女要和留学生去海边私奔。密探时刻监视着人们的生活，所有电影和摄影都被严密审查，艺术创作自由被严重干涉。学院的领导画像被丢到地下室，甚至创始人都被易名。所以很多为了生存的底层人民便铤而走险，成了生活在阴暗中的老鼠，肮脏的垃圾堆和妓院是地下室的象征。而燃烧的报纸代表着小册子，成为了滋养老鼠的温床。而老鼠最终都逃不过被乱棍打死的下场。但影片的整体基调是阳光的，给男主大衣和奖券的老人说明人间还存在善意。男主虽然被妓女骗走了钱，但是还是把妹妹送到了海边。最终他回归合唱团，重新走到了阳光下。老鼠等待着它的觉醒，等待着它的钟声，等待着它的烈日。它无光的双眼，将变得耀眼且充满生机。
