Returning from abroad to Sicily, a former diplomat informs the police about a strange discovery he has just made. The next day, police inspector Lepri comes to the man's place and finds him dead. Has he committed suicide? While conducting his investigation, Lepri happens to suspect his own commissioner - Meanwhile, a train comes to a stop somewhere in the countryside because of a malfunctioning signal. A motorist decides to alert the station master but he too is found dead, as well as another railway agent. For the police, the driver cannot but be linked to those mysterious deaths.
Volonté最后一部意大利电影。面部大特写，温和明亮的褐色眼睛，好帅啊啊啊啊。（后期最喜欢他演这种绵里藏针的老年知识分子了）编剧导演居然对原作如此忠诚并未给他疯狂加戏，感动之余也有点失落呢（查了下原来和Il Consiglio d'Egitto是同个导演，好吧那应该是导演只有这点本事。
影片保持了小说的风格，其手法几乎是抽象化的：故事的背景是西西里，但是一个寒冷的、冬季的西西里。内景则是普通的、日常的。外景也并无特色，不具有观光旅游的景致，是很容易用来表现寓言故事的。
