Ralph Burton is a miner who is trapped for several days as a result of a cave-in. When he finally manages to dig himself out, he realizes that all of mankind seems to have been destroyed in a nuclear holocaust. He travels to New York City only to find it deserted. Making a life for himself there, he is flabbergasted to eventually find Sarah Crandall, who also managed to survive. Together, they form a close friendship until the arrival of Benson Thacker who has managed to pilot his small boat into the city's harbor. At this point the tensions rise between the three, particularly between Thacker, who is white and Burton, who is black.

海报漂亮。先驱型作品,冷战时期的核恐慌。Too late, no place to go. 开场半小时镜头里仅一人,配得上这个宣传标语。配乐与宾虚同作曲。Why should the wall fall down to prove I am what I am? That is nothing wrong with what I am. 片名人物一一对应:World是黑人联系世界,Flesh是女人出卖肉体,Devil是白人虚伪假善。- I want him to have you. - Sooner or later someone would have to ask me what I want. - Won’t be me that asks. 一个只会给予,一个只知索取。女性意识觉醒。
后半段疲软,作为酒鬼的我,第一反应就是假如发生自己身上,矿井逃出生天后改去城中哪一家酒吧扫荡威士忌呢?

【Criterion Channel】绝大部分人类已经死于核中毒,幸存的黑人青年、白人女子、白人中年男在纽约荒城演出「嬲」字局面:爱欲冲突。片头注明张爱玲丈夫Ferdinand Reyher的贡献为screen story(剧本故事),编剧则为导演本人(Ranald MacDougall,他编剧的Mildred Pierce《小团圆》也提到)。郑树森译片名为《世界,肉体,魔鬼》我觉得较佳。阒无人迹的纽约街头酷似当代封城时,黑白的末日后都市影像,也很有视觉冲击力。对种族歧视的中肯反映与黑人心理的细腻刻画都常青不败。乐观的结尾我觉得很有赖雅手笔的感觉:张爱玲大概陪他第一时间观看了此片,何年何日的事?赖雅日记里应仍查得出记载。即使它与张毫无关系也是四星佳作。
格局太小,当年在场面调度上也算另一种大制作了
世界上剩下的最后一个人,有着绝对的自由,却还佯装自己活在社会之中…在我这种离群索居的人看来极不靠谱。主角说“people will talk”的时候似乎是高度意识到荧幕之外的spectatorship的,有点意思。

人物冲突的点讲得不太明白,显得勉强,但对性别和种族的观念还是超前那个时代的

以「世界末日」的硬核科幻想象,却空洞得挨过前半段之后,后半段忽然成为某种情感与三角关系的「封闭式」讨论,令人莫名其妙。
◎末世题材之下,视角放在最后的人身上: 一人行,孤独求生; 二人行,别别扭扭; 三人行,鲶鱼效应,直面矛盾。 结尾流俗,不过片尾的「开始」非常可爱。
