默斯·康宁汉是20世纪最伟大的现代舞编舞家之一。他1953年成立了康宁汉舞团，用充满实验性的编舞，一次又一次颠覆了舞蹈的固定框架。他打破高雅艺术和流行文化的门槛，也突破了不同艺术门类的壁垒，常与流行歌手和其他艺术门类的艺术家一起创作，制作了许多令人叹为观止的舞蹈空间。2019年是康宁汉诞辰100周年，也是他逝世20周年。本片将康宁汉的经典舞蹈设计通过3D化呈现，给观众身临其境的体验，重现了那些不可重来的珍贵舞台瞬间，让艺术灵感的璀璨再现，并拓展观众对于舞蹈的想象力。
Even for those who know little about dance, Merce Cunningham is a recognizable name - an iconic figure in his field. His mid-20th century collaborations with composer John Cage (his lifelong partner) and visual artist Robert Rauschenberg were central to an era of transformation. Cunningham resisted "avant-garde" or any other label. "I don't describe it. I do it," he once said. Now, with Cunningham, we have a chance to experience what he did. Filmmaker Alla Kovgan assembles the last generation of Cunningham dancers (led by Merce Cunningham Dance Company assistant director of choreography Jennifer Goggans) to present landmark works from the Cunningham repertoire. The film concentrates on the three decades from 1942 to 1972 when Cunningham was making his reputation. Gorgeously shot in 3D, Cunningham brings us closer to these works than any audience has ever been before. 拓展了对舞蹈的想象力是毋庸置疑的。《夏日空间》里劳森伯格设计的点彩背景，从舞者身上流泻至整个三维背景，与环境不分彼此，让人仿佛身临鸟语花香之境。但是真的好像煮熟的虾的酮类胡萝卜素色素蛋白质变性的小斑点啊！！密恐极度不适。另外，3D化也太迷惑了😢

这部电影重现了康宁汉经典舞蹈场面，在公园里、草地上、城堡内、屋顶上、宫殿广场上，还有舞台上，舞者实验性、另类、怪异的舞蹈着。怎么说呢，random, experimental, intuitive, yet devastating。就算把康宁汉1940年代的作品放在2021年，都是前卫的，可以想见在他的时代背景下，他的创作是多么的需要勇气和坚持。有趣的是，当记者问到他do you describe your work as avant-garde? 他说，I don't describe, I just do it。当一个人充满了对舞蹈的热爱而需要去表达自己汹涌的创作欲望时候，也许外界的评判已经不再重要了。而真正高级的艺术，都是从不媚俗而毫无畏惧的自我表达。想起他对Robert Rauschenberg说，we have two things in common, idea and poverty。
