因为Parnell一出场已是爱尔兰的大人物，且影片视角更多的放在了Parnell与O'Shea夫人的婚外情上，即使中间许多情节是由这段爱情合理驱动的，却依然让Parnell在爱尔兰地方自治上穷尽一生的努力显得轻飘飘的，实属可惜。导演手握Clark Gable和Myrna Loy拍好一段恋爱也是必然，那场大雾中同行吃烤土豆的戏很好看。Gable饰演领袖也不同以往狡黠不羁的形象，很沉稳内敛。
