一个从芝加哥来到斯巴达准备建工厂的商人Mr. Colbert被发现死于街头。一个正在火车站等车的黑人Virgil Tibbs（西德尼·波蒂埃 Sidney Poitier 饰）被警察当作嫌疑犯抓到警察局。一番盘查之下，Tibbs告诉当地警方，他也是一名警察，而且擅长处理凶杀案件。他遭到调查的原因只是因为他是黑人，他迫切想离开当地，然而Tibbs的上司让他留在当地，和当地警长Bill Gillespie（罗德·斯泰格尔 Rod Steiger 饰）一起查案。在这个种族歧视极为严重的地方，Tibbs的调查遭遇了重重阻拦，Bill也劝他早日离开，不要再插手。然而Tibbs却始终不肯放弃，坚持要查出真相......

The murdered man, Mr. Colbert, had come to Sparta from the North to build a new factory and his wife and business associates immediately point the finger at Endicott, the most powerful man in the county and the one who had the most to lose if a major new employer comes to the area. Tibbs' life is clearly in danger but he perseveres in a highly charged and racially explosive environment until the killer is found.

早期的黑人和白人的故事
精通刑侦的黑人警官路过密西西比小镇，偶遇凶杀案被错当成凶手，消除误解后又全力参与破案的故事。电影拍摄于20世纪60年代，此时南北战争已过去了一百年，种族歧视仍如此严重，今年是2023年，情况变得更好了吗?

不否认电影的优秀，但能获得奥斯卡奖的青睐多少沾了政治需要的光。
一个受种族歧视阻碍的黑人警探，一上来就被抓成本案嫌疑人，一个暴躁红脖子搭档
披着悬疑皮的反种族歧视喜剧，节奏太慢了，一个小时过去了才开始正经查案情，中途还有些给黑人警官看黑人摘棉花、小镇居民偷袭黑人警官这种非常浮于表面的种族歧视桥段。优点也有，黑白警官演技蛮好，顺带着剧情推进的感情变化也自然，不是一下就变兄弟的刻意做作，而是有一个较长的磨合认同的过程，热带风情的bgm也还挺入耳。
这可是67年 很大胆的一次尝试 我不信你们看不出醉谈的氛围。。
60年代的《瞬息全宇宙》。意思就是故事很平庸，倒是符合美国那个那个时代政治需求。男主整部剧里的状态时刻有一种“我被伤害，但是我忍着”的莫名绿茶感。然后一个烂梗“偷窥裸女”居然贯穿全片，节奏非常一般，比瞬息全宇宙节奏还烂，显得白人警官吊儿郎当嚼口香糖，三番五次抓错人，只有黑人才代表着睿智正义和真理。
黑人掌箍白人的镜头太经典！
67年美国的摄影技术真好！可能看的是西德尼的第三部片子吧，这部片子中觉得警长演的不错，他对黑人可以做到抛除一直以来的旧观念，看到他的优点，一次一次选择站在他的那一边，到最后真诚的对他说保重，很令人感动！案子本身并不复杂，更凸显的是对黑人的压迫对待！
